Brown? Not Black?

"Brown? Not Black?" is a podcast about the politics of being in brown skin. The two hosts of the show aim to learn about themselves and the world around them through conversations about various cultures and the experiences of people who were raised in them. The visual identity design was created with the goal of simplicity to allow the provocative name of the podcast to be in focus. Colors and typography were selected with the goal of recreating the visual style commonly associated with '70s-era Black political movements and organizations.

Scope of Work: Visual Identity Design, Brand Strategy, Social Media Assets & Strategy

Notes on the design:Green was chosen as the background color as it is a color commonly associated with growth, the ultimate goal of the two hosts in having these discussions. The basis of the show is exchanging ideas and sharing experiences. This is represented in the design by the text box encasing the title of the podcast. The name of the podcast was chosen by the hosts as the show came about after a discussion around the question, “What is Black?” The title is intentionally provocative, which is something I wanted to highlight by italicizing certain aspects.

Notes on the design:

  • Green was chosen as the background color as it is a color commonly associated with growth, the ultimate goal of the two hosts in having these discussions.

  • The basis of the show is engaging in an exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences. To represent this idea, a speech box was chosen to frame the title of the podcast and as a recurring motif throughout the identity.

  • The name of the podcast was chosen by the hosts as the show came about after a discussion around the question, “What is Black?” The title is intentionally provocative, which is something I wanted to highlight by italicizing the word “not”.
